Stan The Man

November 12, 2010

Stanley Kubrick may well be one of the finest film directors of the 20th century but we at Swine really love Accrington Stanley because of his anti-fashion fashion sense. From Paths Of Glory to Full Metal Jacket, Stan’s war films highlighted the way soldiers were dehumanised and used as scapegoats for the ruling powers. His sci-fi and supernatural films, his social satires and historical epics all convey the power of film as a tactile almost three dimensional medium (3-D in 2D). But forget 2001, Dr Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Barry Lynden, Kubrick’s appeal to us is his proto-scruff dressed down scallydelic look; the unkempt hair, the rag arse beard, the baggy sweats and snorkels; very Manc 84!
